The Black Yankees swept a double header from the Washington Elite Giants at Dexter Park on September 6, 1937. A crowd of 6000 was on hand and those fortunate few had an opportunity to see two Giants' Hall of Fame catchers. Biz Mackey caught the first game and went 0 for 5 against Yankees hurler Bill Holland.
A 15 year old Roy Campanella started the second game and was 1 for 2 before being pulled for Leroy Morney in the 7th inning.
When Campanella first appeared for the Elite Giants in June, sportswriter Randy Dixon of the Philadelphia Tribune opined:
Roy went on exhibition last Saturday when the Elites and the Newark Eagles cavorted on local loam while the Phila. stars were out on the road . . . And what he showed was a revelation. "Your Man" Dixon says without qualification that no one, anywhere, possess a more deadly or accurate throwing arm from home plate to second base than this mere slip of a lad. . . . The only thing I don't like about him is the length of his name. Sorta tough on columnists and headline writers to spell correctly.
Indeed.
